In SICO there is a huge variety of grouting compounds. If you are wondering what grout to choose, you should know that there are special grouts for bathrooms, grouts for stone, for terracotta, for granite tiles.
Not every type of grout is suitable for every type of tile and for every room. SICO specialists will help you make the best choice for your premises.
Why do we need a grout?
Grout compounds are used to fill the space between the tiles and connect the individual components so that you get a finished project. However, they are not only for beauty. They play an important role in relieving stress from the movement of the tiles.
If there are no joints, cracking of the tiles is guaranteed. The load from slight deformations due to temperature changes or slight tremors is taken over by the joints, and thanks to their properties and their quality placement, the structure maintains its strength.
Also, grouting compounds extend the life of the tiles and mask some flaws when laying them. They protect the base of the flooring from the penetration of moisture, respectively, they have protective properties against molds.
This is an extremely important quality, especially in rooms with high humidity such as the bathroom . If chosen correctly, the right joint can increase the strength of the tiles because it has a strengthening effect.
In order to choose the product correctly, the first condition you must consider is the room for which you need the grout . It is of great importance whether the room is wet (for example the bathroom), indoors or outdoors.
These factors are decisive when choosing a grout , because different types have different applications and qualities.
What do we need to know about the types of mixtures?
Before we go any further, we will provide you with detailed information about the two main types of grouts - cementitious grouts (CG) and epoxy grouts (RG). Along with this, we will share their properties, applications and of course the pros and cons.
Ordinary cement screed (also called CG) is a mixture of cement, water and aggregates. This is perhaps the most common grout. Usually this mixture is produced in a dry form , and before use it must be mixed with water to obtain a smooth consistency similar to sour cream.
The basis of this grout is white or gray cement with pigment and plasticizers, and some higher quality and widely applicable types (CG2) and sand (minerals).
Cement grouts are generally the cheapest option. They are relatively easy to apply and harden gradually, which allows you to correct flaws in case you notice irregularities and gaps. However, the slow hardening of the joint can also be considered as a disadvantage.
The cement grout can be applied to closed rooms with a low level of humidity, such as the bedroom, living room, corridor.
It is a suitable choice when filling joints between small ceramic or stone tiles, mainly on walls, as they are not exposed to a strong flow of water, nor are they cleaned too often with strong detergents.
It is not recommended to use cement grout for marble tiles. Experts advise not to use this kind of mixture for the bathroom , unless it is of the high class, with special impurities and high quality, and it is not explicitly mentioned in the instructions that it is applicable for this purpose!
Epoxy grouting compounds
Epoxy grouts (RG) are more resistant to chemical and mechanical factors and are harder than cement ones. They are two-component and have a non-porous surface.
Before use, mix the epoxy resin with hardener according to the manufacturer's instructions. These mixes can generally be used for joints up to 15mm wide.
If you're wondering what grout to use for your bathroom, you can't go wrong with this type. Epoxy mixtures are reliable , do not crack, do not darken, hold firmly and will serve you faithfully for many years.
Some manufacturers claim that with proper placement and maintenance, epoxy grout retains its properties for up to 50 years!
One of the most valuable qualities of this type of grouting mixture is its high waterproofing, high elasticity and water resistance. It does not allow moisture to penetrate into the joints , and this will save you problems with mold and mildew.
This is a particularly suitable and recommended grout for tiles glued to plasterboard , as this grout is resistant to deformation (which occurs as a result of fluctuations in the surface and can lead to cracking, but not if the joints are with an epoxy grout ).
With epoxy grouting mixtures , you can glue ceramics, glass, metal and natural stone . Remember something very important - in rooms with high humidity, you must use only grouting mixtures with antibacterial properties.
